Snoring Problem: Physical and Emotional Symptoms

Snoring is a well known topic of jokes, cartoons and comedies, but for a lot of people it is not funny at all. Snoring can be a serious problem, bothering the normal cycle of sleeping and your partner’s life, as she must try to sleep under noise conditions.

Snoring is very popular, but because many times it keeps partners awake, its impact is quite great and it can even menace marriages. Snoring noise is provoked by air which flows through narrow breathing tracts, in the mouth area, the nose and pharynx one, causing vibration. Nasal tracts, the tongue, the soft palate, the uvula (the mobile portion which hangs at the end of the pharynx), the muscles which are found behind the pharynx and larynx can be all involved. The main factors which trigger snoring are excessive weight, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, the presence of fat or glandular tissues in the throat area, as well as allergies. In a less number of cases snoring is caused by the anatomic structure of breathing tracts and by the position of the nerves in the palatal muscles and pharynx. Some people just snore! Even if they don’t smoke, don’t drink a lot, don’t suffer from allergies and are not overweight, they can snore so that they wake up all the people in the house.

Beyond joking, a person who snores loudly is possible to suffer from a serious sleeping disorder, called obstructive sleeping apnea, which needs medical cure, but in the case of light and occasional snoring there are more ways of having a quiet night.

To continue with, from the emotional point of view people can become depressive, irritable and anxious. It is obvious because lack of sleep has clear consequences upon the psychic. Moreover, because of repeated sleep interruptions people who snore can start their day with headaches and they can be sleepy all day long and their efficiency in everything they do is low. Therefore they can’t concentrate properly, they don’t pay attention to what they are told, they look absent minded and they can have poor memory. Besides, they can suffer as well from decrease of sexual performance and the risk of car accidents can increase in the case of these persons. Thus, it is obvious that they have to take measures.

Random Sleeping Tip
There are a lot of people who are in a habit of eating large meals before going to bed. This is a very unhealthy practice that these individuals follow because eating large meals that are fatty and greasy can cause you to suffer from heartburn during nighttime and that can break your sleep cycle. Therefore it is really important that you do not eat a large meal just before bedtime and must space it out by about 2 to 3 hours before going to bed so that you do not suffer from indigestion.

You can check obstructive apnea risk while sleeping via a questionnaire: Which is the probability of falling asleep in each of the following situations? You have to choose the number which fits the best each situation, according to the score below:

  1. 0 – no chance to fall asleep
  2. 1 – Little chance to fall asleep
  3. 2 - Moderate chances to fall asleep
  4. 3 – High chances to fall asleep
    • Sitting and reading
    • watching TV
    • sitting without doing anything in a public place (for example at the cinema or at a meeting)
    • As passenger in a car for 1 hour without interruption
    • lying in the afternoon to have a rest, when circumstances allow it
    • sitting and talking to somebody
    • sitting quietly after lunch, without drinking any alcohol
    • In the car, when it is stopped for a few minutes in the traffic

If the total score is higher than 9, it is possible to suffer from obstructive apnea and you have to see a doctor.
