Need Help Getting a Good Night's Sleep? Head to a Sleep Disorder Center

There are many people in this world who suffer from a number of sleep disorders, some serious and some not so serious. However, despite increased awareness of the problem, very few sufferers consult a sleep disorder center when faced with sleeping problems. Usually people tend to think that such occurrences when sporadic, are common, and this is not too wrong a notion. However, there is a fine line between harmless sleepless nights and chronic insomniac nights.

Insomnia mostly starts with irregular sleep -- not being able to sleep at your regular bedtime; fitful sleep -- waking up many times during the night without any apparent reason, and having difficulty going back to sleep; light sleep -- unable to go into deep sleep; and so on. Sometimes these symptoms are indeed temporary and only occur due to stress or excitement. However, temporary insomnia could also be a harbinger of a serious sleeping problem brewing.

When You Should Consult a Sleep Disorder Center?

There are many tiny alarm signals, which should tell you when you ought to seek help. This is the time when you should get an appointment and visit a sleep disorder center for help. You must have heard of the saying, 'One stitch in time saves nine.' This is exactly what a timely visit to a sleep disorder center can do for you - save you the trouble of a prolonged and expensive treatment later on.

The symptoms that you have to watch out for, among others, are mainly: One, a continuous lack of sleep for more than three to four days, whether it is part time or full time; second, fitful sleep for more than a week; next, light sleep for more than a week, or a lack of sleep with an unusual butterfly-in-the-stomach feeling without any plausible reason; also, a lack of sleep associated with continuous unexplained nervousness; and finally, an inability to sleep despite feeling dog-tired.

Random Sleeping Tip
Another very common cause that makes people get up several times at night is that they drink a lot of water before going to bed. Therefore it is important that you do not drink fluids before going to bed so that you are able to avoid getting up several times at night. It is best that you take fluids about 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.

Possible Treatments for Insomnia

There are research studies that found melatonin supplements to be a very effective treatment for insomnia in some people. However, it was also found that while some people respond well to this supplement, others are left totally unaffected. Further studies showed that people who have poor melatonin production respond well to the supplement treatment, while those with adequate production remain neutral.

The sleep disorder center can also advise you about a number of physiotherapies to induce help such as yoga, steam bath, hot bath before bed, warm oil massage, just to name a few examples. These may or may not be combined with sleeping pills or relaxants that promote sleep. Whatever the treatment, a good sleep specialist can save you hours of nighttime wakefulness and help preserve your health and sanity.
