Introduction

It is strange but true that bed wetting is hereditary. So if young children wet their bed it is perhaps because their forefathers also wet beds. But more seriously, it must be understood that babies are born with just a few skills like respiration and maybe crying for food or to signal discomfort. Bladder control has to taught to children while they are still very young. Bed wetting is a nocturnal medical disorder and is also known as enuresis.

Genesis

Bed wetting is one of the commonest sleep disorders. It occurs amongst young children and more often in boys than in girls. In some case it spills over to the adolescence stage. Even though it is because of uncontrolled bladder action, bed wetting does not take place because of lack of bladder control. It is because the person sees images that prod him on to relieving himself in bed. Almost immediately thereafter he wakes up full of remorse.

Taking Care of Bed Wetting

Bed wetting is a genetic problem which is sometimes also associated with a slow development of the nervous system or urinary tract disorders. Taking care of bed wetting begins early in a child’s life when he has to be taught to recognize the symptoms which identify the fullness or the feeling of fullness of his bladder. He must learn to empty his bladder periodically and not wait for emergent evacuation when it is too late. As he grows older, the child may be asked to refrain from drinking fluids an hour before bed time. He must be explained that sometimes restlessness at night is due to the inconvenience caused by a full bladder and that he must arise and go to the toilet to relieve himself. In the beginning this habit may have to be enforced at night by the parents by waking up the child and escorting him to the toilet. Once the child’s body mechanism gets used to this procedure the problem of be wetting will be resolved.

Random Sleeping Tip
Another very common cause that makes people get up several times at night is that they drink a lot of water before going to bed. Therefore it is important that you do not drink fluids before going to bed so that you are able to avoid getting up several times at night. It is best that you take fluids about 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.

In the rare case of persistent bed wetting past six years, a medical examination to look for  an under developed bladder, urinary tract infections, hormonal imbalances or disorders of the nervous system may be required. Psychological counseling of the child may also be considered. Since bed wetting is always followed by a feeling of remorse the event is an embarrassing issue and any rebuking instills a feeling of guilt and inferiority in the errant child. It must be understood that bed wetting occurs inadvertently and is really beyond the control of the child unless he is trained to overcome the problem.

Conclusion

Bed wetting is a sleep disorder that occurs in young children but spills over to adolescence in some cases. Children have to be taught to recognize the symptoms of the fullness of their bladders and the necessity of relieving themselves at appropriate intervals. This training has to be imparted by parents with love, persuasion and firmness. At no stage must the child be rebuke should he err.
